Clarity explores MST (Multi-Sensory Training) as a complementary approach for people navigating lingering post-concussion symptoms — alongside, not in place of, medical and rehabilitative care.

What is post-concussion syndrome?

Post-concussion syndrome refers to symptoms — physical, cognitive, and sensory — that persist for weeks, months, or longer after a head injury, even after the initial concussion has been medically cleared. It affects how the brain processes and integrates input from the senses.

How MST is being explored for concussion recovery

MST simultaneously engages colored light, vestibular (motion) stimulation, auditory stimulation, and somatosensory input — processed together at the brainstem and subcortical level. A concussion can disrupt the brain's ability to integrate these systems; MST is explored as a way to help the brain re-learn those multisensory pathways rather than addressing each sense in isolation.

The typical program is a 12-day in-office intensive (two 30-minute sessions per day), followed by an 18-day at-home continuation. Most people notice early changes before the program is complete, though the full effect is typically not apparent until around 90 days.

What research and reporting say

What We Know

MST was developed by Dr. Steven J. Curtis, OD. His 2019 outcomes research (Curtis SJ, Vision Development & Rehabilitation, 2019;5(4):235–248) reported post-concussion patients showing symptom improvement within 38 days of starting the program, based on standardized symptom surveys. Separately, researchers at the University of Miami's Department of Otolaryngology (Minesinger et al.), working with Dr. Curtis, presented preliminary findings on a related multisensory approach (PNRT) in patients with mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury, using objective eye-tracking and balance measures.

What We Don't Know

The University of Miami study involved only 7 participants, and the researchers themselves state the improvements did not hold up under statistical correction for multiple comparisons at that sample size — they describe the findings as hypothesis-generating, not proof of effect, and call for larger, adequately powered trials. The outcomes research is largely developer-authored and has not yet been independently replicated by unrelated research groups.

What does the published research actually measure, and in what population? How will progress be tracked against a starting baseline? How does this fit alongside your existing neurology, vision therapy, or vestibular care?

In the news

A June 2026 Post-Journal feature profiled a patient of Dr. Curtis who had lived with post-concussion syndrome for several years following a car accident, including balance, vision, memory, and focus difficulties, and who later developed attention challenges as well. She described a meaningful personal recovery after completing MST with Dr. Curtis, and the article noted MST is now offered at roughly 32 locations across the U.S. This is one individual's account of her own experience with Dr. Curtis directly, reported independently by a local newspaper — not a Clarity patient outcome, and not a clinical measurement of results.

Current conventional approaches

Post-concussion care commonly includes cognitive therapy, vision therapy, vestibular therapy, and other rehabilitative approaches, often delivered by a team of specialists over an extended period. Clarity's MST program is intended to complement this kind of care, not replace it — many people exploring MST are doing so after or alongside other rehabilitative therapies.
